President Roosevelt: The Conservationist
Roosevelt realized the value and importance of conservation and was persuaded by other conservationists to initiate momentous conservation projects.
The Desert Land Act 1877 was the first conservation act to be passed by Congress though it did little help to the environment. A more successful act was the Forest Reserve Act of 1891 which let the President set aside land to be protected and used as national parks. Under the Forest Reserve Act of 1891, 46 million acres of land were set aside and preserved. The Newlands Act of 1902 started irrigation projects in the western states.
