Coal Mine Strike
Coal was used to power the industries and commerce in the United states. Coal rock itself was necessary for the use of indoor heating especially in the winter time.In Pennsylvania, miners had left work on May 12 on a strike for shorter work days (8-hour days) and an increase in pay. In October 3, 1906, President Roosevelt went to meet with the coal miners and operators in order to stop the coal strike. Roosevelt wanted the workers and the field operators to quickly and easily solve this dispute. The coal field operators, however, chose to ignore the President's words and in order to avoid an unhappy situation, he threatened to send the military over to Pennsylvania to control the mines. In the end the miners won the argument and everything was settled peacefully.
